Architecture does more than solve functional needs; it also produces meaning. Every building organizes access, circulation, hierarchies, and ways of inhabiting space, and in doing so, it shapes how a community recognizes itself, remembers, and projects itself into the future. In this sense, cultural identity in contemporary architecture is not exhausted by the visible form of buildings. It is also constructed through patterns of use, everyday rhythms, shared memories, and the emotional ties associated with space.
In a context shaped by globalization, mobility, and digitalization, the challenge is no longer to choose between the local and the global as if they were opposing forces. From this perspective, architecture operates as a mediation between global flows and local singularities, capable of building a sense of place in an increasingly homogeneous world.
Architecture, Identity, and Sense of Place
Throughout the report, we examine how identity is shaped through belonging, memory, and sense of place; how architecture can function as an everyday language that communicates values without saying a word; and how sectors such as hospitality have become a privileged ground for observing the tension between global standardization and local authenticity.
The report explores:
- Identity and belonging: how space influences collective memory and the way a community recognizes itself.
- The global and the local: the role of architecture as a mediator between international trends and specific contexts.
- Hospitality: the growing demand for place-based experiences in contrast to standardized models.
- Digitalization: the impact of data and new tools on the construction of identity.
Cultural identity in architecture is neither a fixed condition nor an automatic attribute of a project. It emerges when space succeeds in articulating memory, use, context, and contemporaneity into a meaningful experience. That is where its power lies: in creating places capable of sustaining belonging, conveying meaning, and establishing lasting connections between people and their environment.
